Values
The core values are a part of what makes us unique. They are rooted in Scripture and a picture of the Kingdom of God. It is our desire that we actually live this out, because actions speak louder than words when it comes to God’s love. Therefore, if these six core values do not translate into us being the message of Jesus, then we have failed you as a church. We hope Rhythm Church is known by:
1. Mission: A church that is for the culture and being sent…
We believe God sent Jesus into the world; and Jesus said to do the same, so Rhythm Church won’t be an isolated sub-culture waiting for you to come to us. The implications of this dramatically affect everything. We will not be “of” culture and lose our identity, “against” culture and lose our relevance, or “above” culture and lose any earthly good. We will be “for” the culture in order to engage and transform it. That means joining with God to be good neighbors and serving those in physical and spiritual need.
(Matthew 28:18-20; Micah 6:8)
2. Community: A church where everyone is valuable…
We believe that, out of the possible things making Christians famous, Jesus said his followers would be best known by their love for one another. This is something we are passionate about, because every life is in the image of God. That means accountability, belonging, sharing one another’s burdens, and spiritual growth happens best when we are relationally connected.
(John 13:34-35; Hebrews 10:24-25)
3. Change: A church of lives being transformed by the grace of God…
We believe becoming what God created us to be happens from the inside out. It’s not enough to follow a bunch of rules, because you can do all the right things and still be an awful person. We see an inseparable bond between grace and growth. That means everyone is accepted, and everyone should be challenged to never stay the same.
(Matthew 23:23-28; Galatians 5:22-23)
4. Authenticity: A church of transparent truth-telling…
We believe there is freedom in being authentic in what we say and do. On a deep level, hypocrisy and facades kill the witness of any church. We not only see truth-telling as a relational virtue, but we see truth also as something objective to be known. If something is true of the world, wherever we may find it, Christians should claim it, because all truth is God’s truth. This starts not only with the Scriptures and the person of Jesus for us, but also with creation, the sciences, or Rolling Stone Magazine. We want to see truth lived out both in our hearts and our minds.
(Ephesians 4:25; I Corinthians 3:21-23)
5. Worship: A church with engaging music that generates daily holy rhythms…
We believe that music says a lot about culture. There are differences between country, punk-rock, indie, or alternative, but each says something about itself. However, too often churches are known for uninspiring music; so, first and foremost, we want worship music that is upbeat, reflective, and sounds like something on your iPod. It also means we want worship that is focused on Christ, creating life-transforming moments that lead to worship being a daily sacrifice for God.
(Colossians 3:16; Romans 12:1-2)
6. Beauty: A church taking the arts and creativity seriously…
We believe that God is beautiful and that creation reflects His beauty. On a practical level, beauty and art are good in and of themselves, regardless of any utilitarian value. We do not divide art into secular or sacred categories, but rather into good, true, and beautiful or bad categories. On a spiritual level, imagination is necessary to see the prophetic and what could be. That is why Rhythm Church values expression, creativity, and the arts.
(Exod. 35:30-36:2; Psalm 104:24)
